Service Design

I LIVE, WE LIVED. WHAT DID WE MISS?

Role:

Service & Experience Designer

Project

Our senior capstone project course will engage and work with members of the Hazelwood community to better understand how losses affect the identity of a community and how, in the aftermath of loss, memory of place changes overtime. Our class will work to address these issues by partnering with the Center of Life (COL), a faith-based, community-empowerment organization that serves residents in the greater Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Together, we will use this collective knowledge to tell a story about this community in an effort to invite conversation.

Objectives

Design an exhibit-like space at Center of Life that tells a story about this community by addressing the issues, culture, and history of Hazelwood.

Team

The entire senior class worked together to create this exhibit. Divided into teams, the class collaborated in research, development, and final implementation.

Impact

After the exhibit has been built up, the church opened its doors to the public. People from the greater Pittsburgh area came to understand and learn the stories and history of Hazelwood. The senior capstone became more than just an opportunity to give Hazelwood a voice in the greater Pittsburgh community, but also to give other communities like Hazelwood a voice through civic engagement.
